They are lighter, dry faster and serve many of the same needs with reduced bulk. If I was in more hot/arid temperatures I would strongly recommend having one as they are very effective in some roles such as protecting against blown sand, wind, extra insulation and being cotton, they dry relatively quickly and acts as a good air-conditioner when wet. It is typically worn by Arab men, as well as some Kurds and Jews. For decades, keffiyeh have been issued to British soldiers who now, almost exclusively, refer to them as shemaghs. Their use by some units and formations of the military and police forces of the former British Empire and subsequent Commonwealth dates back to before the Second World War. Shemaghs are currently worn by special forces worldwide. The Shemagh is essentially a big bandana, usually a square measuring 42 or 44 inches on each side. They come in many colors. I personally have them in green, khaki and white, pikachu costume which should cover all seasons (for some quick head camouflage). What is a shemagh? Nothing more than a simple 42 X 42 inch woven piece of cotton fabric. What you can do with the shemagh, however, is a completely different story. The shemagh, also called a keffiyeh, originated in the Middle East and was used to protect the wearer's face from the harsh desert environment. Aside from a fit guy with a beard, few things scream operator more than wearing a shemagh. While on my first deployment, aside from my regular duties, I spent four hours every other day on a guard tower. The night shifts were usually pretty boring, but the day shift I got to experience and see all sorts of good stuff; kozaki but one thing that really stands out negatively is the flies. I kid you not when I say we could swing fly swatters continually killing 15 flies a hit, and never see a drop in number over four hours. I have never seen so many flies in my life; I quickly purchase my own neutral colored shemagh to wear under my Kevlar specifically for keeping the flies off my face and neck.
